MANIFESTO
Here are my five key policies
AUTONOMY FOR SCOTTISH YOUNG LABOUR
This election is for two roles: Scotland rep on the Young Labour UK Committee and Chair of Scottish Young Labour (SYL). This is a new change, after a rule was passed without the consent of Scottish members. Under my leadership I will ensure changes affecting us will be made by us. I will champion Scottish voices and interests on the UK committee, whilst defending our devolved structures and autonomy.
AN OPEN AND DEMOCRATIC SYL, FOR ALL MEMBERS
I will push to elect ALL positions on the SYL committee under One Member One Vote, via an online ballot so not just those who can attend a conference can take part in our democracy. I will also ensure we consistently ballot members on important issues and endorsements. Lastly, I will work to break down geographical barriers. I’ll engage with members no matter where they live – SYL will be present in all regions.
STANDING UP FOR MINORITIES
Fight for the liberation and justice of LGBT, BAME, disabled and women members. I will encourage collaboration with organisations such as Socialists of Colour, the 1987 Caucus, the LCTR, JLM, LGBT+ Labour Scotland (and more!) to ensure minority voices are at the front and centre of our movement. I will empower our liberation caucuses to create safe, inspiring spaces for groups to organise together. I will call for a return of UK Young Labour liberation officers and a liberation conference.
TRADES AND TENANTS UNIONS
It is vital that SYL has strong links with our Unions. This starts with organising training days, young workers conference and collaborative events to encourage young members to join trade unions and young workers to get involved in the Labour movement. Through work with tenant’s unions we will equip young members with the knowledge to stand up against rogue and exploitative landlords and organise themselves within our communities. I will use my experience on the STUC Young Workers Committee to achieve this.
A SOCIALIST CAMPAIGN FORCE IN SCOTLAND
We are just months away from the Holyrood 2021 elections and we are in for the fight of our lives. We need an active, energised and motivated youth wing that can support Richard Leonard and the party going into next year. I’ll create an SYL which is welcoming, that holds frequent events and that harnesses the skills of young members whilst supporting their enthusiasm and passion by equipping them with the resources they need.
